Wings: Aviation & Aerials

Since my first flight in a small plane as a kid I have been hooked on flying machines. From simple to complex, my coverage of aviation subjects for AIR & SPACE Magazine, SMITHSONIAN Magazine, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Magazine and books have been some of my most enjoyable and memorable assignments. Shooting air to air photos of paragliders or formations of F -111 tactical fighter bombers, every aviation shoot has a unique set of challenges. Aerial views of things on the ground is a lesson in high speed choreography, the photographer the pilot and the earthbound subject. I have logged hundreds of hours in flight time in fixed wing airplanes and helicopters during my career. Surviving one crash in a small plane and an auto rotate "hard landing" in a helicopter, the inherent danger of tthe work is not lost on me. However, I still love the thrilling freedom and the incredible images you get from flying!

  • Shot on assignment for AIR &SPACE Smithsonian Magazine. This strange aircraft called the Ornithoper was built by students to test if the bird like motion of the flapping wings will actually make it fly. Shot on location at the University of Toronto School of aerospace technologies. The technique of painting with multiple bursts of strobelight with the shutter open recorded the motion of the flapping wings.
  • Shot for NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Magazine. Pilot Craig Fountain releases a stream of smoke to test for wind drift before spraying his load of agricultural chemicals. This photo was taken using a remote camera attached to the upper wing of the Gruman Ag-cat biplane and triggered by a radio transmitter.
  • Shot on assignment for AIR & SPACE Smithsonian Magazine. Workmen at the Sproat lake Flying Tankers aerial firefighting base on Vancouver, Island, B.C. make repairs to a wing flap from the one of the Martin Mars flying boats that is used to drop water on remote forest fires. The huge amphibious planes can deliver 7200 gallons in a single load.
  • Shot for NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Magazine. A BLM helicopter and riders on horseback round up wild horses on public land in southwestern Wyoming. The coverage on wild horses was part of a year long photo assignment for NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Magazine that produced an essay on the great basin region {quote}Sagebrush Country: Americas Outback{quote}.
